What do you want to be remembered for?
One thing that keeps coming up in my client's sessions is the lack of purpose in their lives- they are wandering in life without a clear plan or goal of what they want to achieve.
Who never felt this way?
It's very common to feel lost some time in our life journey, simply focusing on the demands of our daily lives and short-term goals.
But what if I told you that thinking on a long term goal could potentially change the way you are living your life right now and find a way out of overwhelm and burn out?
A good way of gaining clarity about the things you want to achieve later in life, both in your personal and career life, is to think of
What do you want to be remembered for!
Do you remember when you were a child and people around you would ask you what did you want to be when you grew up? Although, unconsciously, even at that young age, you could envision your future as an adult. Maybe your answer was to become a teacher, a vet, or have children! Without realizing it, you were influenced by those unconscious thoughts whenever you were playing as a child, on your favorite subjects in school, whenever you had to choose the next step in your academic life or whenever you fell in love with someone.
Thinking about the way you would like to be remembered for guides your choices the same way as the thinking about what we wanted to be growing up!
A good exercise you can try is to use this question as a prompt in your journal.
Mentally, go forwards to a time where you feel fulfillment in life. Perhaps, thinking of you in your retirement or as elderly. What would you like those around you to remember of you the most? Is it the hustler and the amazing career you built in your life? Is it the way you brought up your loving family? Is it the kindness and compassion you connected with anyone that crossed your path? Is it how successful or giving you were?
Connect with the feelings you have whenever you think of something. Does it bring a smile to your face? Does your heartbeat pumps faster? Do you feel a warm feeling in your heart? In your tummy?
The way we feel about everything is down to the pictures we make in our head and the words we say to ourselves, about ourselves. When we have a clear picture in our mind and we connect it to a feeling, the outcome is much more powerful! It will give you the motivation to carry on because you know where you need to go and what you need to do to get there.
If you would like to be remembered for how compassionate and kind you were with those around you, you know that you have to hear more than you speak, you need to act rather than react. You know that you have to be more understanding and have more empathy with those who you come across with.
If you would like to be remembered for the amazing, successful career you built, you know that you will have to invest on yourself, learn all the time, outsource to grow your business, or work your way up in the company you are working for.
Can you see where I am going with this?
By doing this in writing, in a journal, you can refer back to it whenever you feel lost, confused, unmotivated. It will give you the boost you need. It will remember you of your why and connect to your feelings once again, so you feel empowered to conquer your dreams!
